The race for sheriff in Tunica county is clouded by allegations of voter suppression and fraud. Sheriff K.C. Hamp alleges that Dennis Allen forged many of the fifty signatures he needed to file and run for office. Sheriff Hamp says Allen’s paperwork included signatures from dead people, felons and people who don’t even live in Mississippi. Allen has denied all accusations of wrongdoing, saying his voter petition signatures were verified by the Tunica County Circuit Clerk. He has hired two attorneys to look into the matter, and Sheriff Hamp says he plans to ask the Mississippi Attorney General to launch a criminal investigation.
