A plan to raise pay for Mississippi teachers is headed to the House for debate. On Monday the House Education Committee voted to amend Senate Bill 2770, which cleared the House Appropriations Committee yesterday. Senators had proposed paying $500 a year for two years in the form of an annual bonus. The education committee changed the bill to distribute the raise evenly across all teacher paychecks. The measure also would boost the salaries of assistant teachers by $1000 over two years. The total package is projected to cost more than $100 million over two years but some have said it’s not enough. Lawmakers could decide on a different amount during final budget talks in late March.
ClarksdaleNews firmly believes that our school teachers should be paid more, and a lot more than what is being considered here.
