Morgan Freeman has converted his 124-acre ranch near Charleston into a honeybee sanctuary. Forbes magazine reports the Oscar winner imported a total of 26 beehives and has planted bee-friendly Magnolia trees and lavender on the property. Freeman says he obtained the bees from Arkansas and doesn’t even use a bee suit while feeding the insects.
The 81-year-old actor discussed beekeeping with Jimmy Fallon several years ago and in a separate interview with Larry King talked about the loss of bee colonies. A University of Vermont study found that wild bee populations in the United States have declined by 23 percent from 2008 and 2013. Freeman and two partners also own Clarksdale’s Ground Zero Blues Club.
