The Carnegie Public Library presents an evening with Ellen B. Meachum, author of Delta Epiphany: Robert F. Kennedy in Mississippi.
This nationally acclaimed book features Robert Kennedy’s visit to the Mississippi Delta, and Clarksdale, in 1967. It was on this fact finding excursion that Kennedy came face to face with poverty, and it fundamentally changed him.
Starting in Jackson after a visits to Millsaps and Tougaloo College, Kennedy’s short, but profound trip into the Delta included stops in Freedom City in Greenville, a heartfelt stop in Cleveland, and finally into Clarksdale. Here, Kennedy met Brenda Luckett who was only eight years old at the time. Her parents, Edna and J.R. Luckett had taken their only child to see Kennedy that day. (Brenda will be attending this book talk.)
