At last Thursday’s community police forum at the civic auditorium citizen input from four ward meetings was presented. Clarksdale residents are most concerned about gun violence, gang activity and burglaries; despite those concerns, people generally feel safe and will report crimes to the police. The data will help develop a five-year strategic plan for the police department to move toward community oriented policing, and Chief Sandra Williams said getting officers into the community builds trust and respect. A federal grant allowed CPD to hire two officers last year and the department will screen 28 applicants later this month for five more openings. Only three Mississippi cities have higher per-capita crime rates than Clarksdale.
